Three breweries in River Barrel Distributing’s portfolio earned five medals at the 2026 Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Alesong Brewing & Blending, Zoiglhaus Brewing Co., and Trap Door Brewing brought home a combined two gold medals, two silvers, and one bronze - a strong showing for brewery partners we’re proud to represent in Western Washington. The recognition belongs to their brewing teams. For River Barrel, it’s an opportunity to celebrate their work and introduce more bars, restaurants, bottle shops, and retailers to the producers behind these beers. It’s also a reminder of why we value a portfolio with different strengths. A traditional wheat beer, a hop-forward flagship, and carefully developed barrel-aged blends each offer something worth making room for.

What a Great American Beer Festival Medal Means

GABF judges evaluate entries without knowing the brand name, assessing how well each beer represents its competition category. Industry professionals judge within their areas of expertise, with gold, silver, and bronze recognizing excellence in the beer itself - not its packaging or popularity. For a beer buyer, that distinction matters. A medal provides a useful reason to look more closely at a brewery, learn about its approach, and consider where its beers might fit. It doesn’t replace knowing your customers, but it gives the conversation a meaningful starting point. This year, our winning brewery partners offer three very different places to begin.

Alesong Brewing & Blending: Three Medals Across Three Categories

Eugene, Oregon’s Alesong Brewing & Blending earned a medal of each color at GABF 2026. Biere de Noel won gold in Herb and Spice Beer, Cherry Decadence earned silver in Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Stout, and Traditions took bronze in Mixed Culture Brett Beer.

Alesong’s approach centers on oak-aging and blending. The intentionally small producer works across a range of flavors, from tart and fruit-driven beers to richer, malt-focused releases. Its location in Oregon’s Southern Willamette Valley and emphasis on carefully sourced ingredients help shape that identity. Cherry Decadence offers one example of that work: an imperial oatmeal stout aged in Westward Whiskey barrels, bringing together cherry, chocolate, vanilla, and oak character. It’s a distinctly different expression from the other styles recognized in Alesong’s medal haul. For us, the appeal is the opportunity to help buyers explore beyond their usual selections. Alesong is a brewery to consider when building a specialty bottle selection, planning a food-pairing event, or looking for something that invites a longer conversation about how beer is made.

Zoiglhaus Brewing Co.: Gold for Zoigl-Weiss

Portland’s Zoiglhaus Brewing Co. won gold for Zoigl-Weiss in South German-Style Wheat Beer at the 2026 Great American Beer Festival.

Zoiglhaus brings a German brewing focus to its lineup, using imported German malts, hops, and yeast for its traditional styles. Zoigl-Weiss is part of the brewery’s year-round range, alongside beers including Zoigl-Pils & Zoigl-Hell.

We like what this award puts in the spotlight. A thoughtful craft beer selection needs room for traditional styles as well as the latest release. For an account looking to give customers an alternative to another IPA, a well-made wheat beer deserves consideration. Zoigl-Weiss’s recognition is a good reason to revisit that part of the beer list - and to give a familiar style the same attention often reserved for something new.

Trap Door Brewing: Silver for Its Flagship IPA

Washington’s Trap Door Brewing earned silver for Trap Door IPA in American-Style Strong Pale Ale. That is the official GABF award category, even though the beer carries IPA in its name.

Trap Door describes its flagship as a modern West Coast IPA, built with Citra, Mosaic Cryo, and Simcoe hops. Its profile combines citrus, pine, and tropical fruit with a crisp, distinctly bitter character. Recognition for a flagship is especially worth celebrating. Limited releases create opportunities for discovery, but a brewery’s familiar beers deserve attention, too. They can be the first introduction to a producer and the starting point for exploring the rest of its lineup. For buyers taking another look at their Washington craft beer selection, this award offers a timely reason to get reacquainted with Trap Door.

Great Beer Deserves Thoughtful Representation

Our job as a distributor is not to take credit for what happens in the brewhouse. It is to understand the beer, represent it accurately, and help the right accounts connect with the right producers. That means looking beyond the medal announcement. Where does the beer fit on a draft list? What should a bartender or retail team know about it? Which customers might appreciate it? What is available now, and what requires planning around a future release? Those are the conversations we want to have.

We believe independent craft benefits from hands-on representation: people who know the portfolio, communicate clearly, and remain involved after the first order. An award is a welcome moment of recognition. Our responsibility is to help turn that attention into a lasting relationship between a brewery and the accounts that support it.
